As the title suggests, Logic’s “Don’t Be Afraid To Be Different” is a song which encourages its listeners to be fearless in expressing their individuality.  The artists (Logic and Will Smith) use two different strategies to encourage the audience to embrace who they are. The legendary Will Smith centers on his ‘trendsetting’ career, crediting his success to “doing it different”. Meanwhile, Logic sets out to “pump up”, as in inspire, the listener to accomplish his or her goals.

This track is heavily influenced by nostalgia, outside of the fact that it features an old school rapper like Will Smith. For instance, as alluded to earlier, it interpolates the classic 1989 dance song “Pump Up the Jam”. Logic also references vintage MCs Rakim and Run DMC. Moreover, Smith himself begins his verse borrowing a line from his theme song to the classic television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. That show originally aired in 1990 and featured Smith as the star.
