“Easy” by Troye Sivan

On “Easy”, singer Troye Sivan narrates the tale of a romantic relationship that is rapidly meeting its demise. And the primary reason the relationship is in distress is because one of the partner’s misbehaved. It is apparent that said partner cheated. And now having realized this grave mistake, they are are basically doing all their best to mend the broken relationship. Apparently the “cheating” partner still treasures the union and would be devastated to lose it.

Facts about “Easy”

Troye Sivan released “Easy” as a single on Wednesday, the 15th of July, 2020. This single was actually the second song to be released from his 2020 EP (which he titled “In My Dreams”). The album’s first single to be released was the song “Take Yourself Home” (which came out in April of that same year).

Apparently, the lyrics of “Easy” are to a certain degree autobiographical. This is because according to Sivan, the songs on his “In A Dream” album deal with a period in his life full of an “emotional roller coaster”.

About 24 hours after the song’s release, Sivan released its official music video. Said video was directed by Sivan himself.

Is this song about Jacob Bixenman?

It is widely believed that this song is about Sivan’s romantic relationship with American model Jacob Bixenman. It should be noted that Sivan and Bixenman (who are both gay) began dating in February of 2016. However, at some point, their relationship started facing serious issues. It isn’t exactly clear what caused the friction in their union.

Why do people think this song is about cheating? The opening line says, “You ran away to have something to say.” That means the partner walked out to make a power play. Then it says, “I went astray to make it OK,” meaning he didn’t hold his position, he took a lover to feel OK. But if his partner already walked out, he wasn’t cheating. “I went astray,” is only to say he didn’t hold the line on holding out for the old relationship and strayed from his feelings of love for the partner that walked out. (Supported further by him staying, “I’m still in love…”

I think people believe this song is about cheating because of the line “he made it easy” (and maybe “i can’t even look at you” too). “He made it easy” indicates that the narrator found another boy (otherwise he would have used “You”). The narrator may have been struggling with the relationship (maybe lots of fights, long distance, etc.) and found some random fling making ‘being loved’ easier than the relationship. Taddaaaaa – cheating. However, we cannot say for sure. as we all know, troye is a great songwriter, using many metaphors etc.

I used the term “narrator” because we do not know if it is troye’s POV.

It definitely is about cheating. See the lines

“I went astray to make it okay
      And he made it easy”

“I can’t even look at you”

And “This house is on fire”

It makes sense if you read it as:
“you ran away to have something to say, “I went astray to make it okay
And he made it easy, darlin'” “

I know this isn’t popular, but even though I’m curious and want to understand, unless he tells us flat out, it’s none of my business, and I’m ok with that. Even in family issues, I’m that way. My son is used to it but it can drive my son-in-law bonkers.
