Troye Sivan is gay, a fact that can be easily gleaned from this song’s music video, as directed by Gordon von Steiner. Relatedly, said clip is said to have been heavily inspired by “bottom culture”, with the term “bottom” being a well-known colloquialism for a homosexual male who receives, as opposed to gives.

Besides Troye, the credited writers of this song are Alex Chapman, Leland and its producers, Zhone, Novodor and Stylaz Fuego.

Lyrics of “Rush”

It has been pointed out the title of this track is a slang term for a drug more commonly known as “poppers”, which is especially popular amongst gay men. By the looks of things, they take this intoxicant in the name of edifying sexual experiences. And relatedly, the lyrics of this song are not only sexual but also revolve around the amorous, homosexual relationship between the vocalist and addressee.

We know that the latter is likewise male because in a couple of instances, Troye refers to him as “boy”.  The first verse is a bit more blatant, in terms of sexual references, than the second.  But more to the main point is the amorous jolt the vocalist gets from the addressee. Or as Troye implies in the chorus, he “feel(s) the rush” whenever the two of them are together.

It can be, since he follows up by admitting that he’s ‘addicted to the touch’ of the addressee that, at least as far as the chorus goes, said individual would be a personification of “poppers”.

And the post-chorus that follows can also be used to support such a theory, whereas for instance the singer alludes to time slowing down when they are together, or something of sort, as well as the pleasure he derives from the sensation. But as for the actual verses, it is clear that Sivan is singing to a human lover.  And as he explained Rush in his own words, it’s basically about a chance encounter that develops into a serious or sexual relationship.

“I feel the rush
Addicted to your touch
Oh, I feel the rush
It’s so good, it’s so good”
