“Ego Death” by Ty Dolla $ign (ft. Skrillex, FKA twigs & Kanye West)

The three main vocalists on this song are speaking to three different narratives. For Ty Dolla $ign, when he refers to “ego death” such is a metaphor for how devastated he felt after being left behind by the woman he loves. Meanwhile Kanye goes about depicting himself as some sort of hip-hop revolutionary, throwing jabs at an overall entertainment industry which he views as being hypocritical. And FKA Twigs alludes more to psychological connotation of ego death, implying that when she does get her pride under control, it tends to rear its head once more.

Facts about “Ego Death”

There are many artists credited with writing this song, partially due to the fact that it samples a handful of other tracks. The tracks are as follows:

  • “Dance for Me” by Queen Latifah
  • “Free” by Ultra Naté
  • “You Used to Hold Me” by Ralphi Rosario

As such Latifah, Naté and Rosario are amongst the writers credited. Then we also have Serpentwithteeth (who also provides additional vocals) and many other songwriters, including the primary artists themselves – Ty Dolla, West, Skrillex and Twigs.

The latter three names on that list – Twigs, Skrillex and Kanye – also produced “Ego Death”.

Atlantic Records released this track on July 1st, 2020. It is a part of Ty Dolla $ign’s “Dream House” album. “Ego Death” came out barely 24 hours after West dropped his hit single “Wash Us in the Blood“.

Most notably Kanye and Ty Dolla $ign have worked together in the past and can in fact be considered regular collaborators. Skrillex has also worked with Ty Dolla on a handful of tracks prior to this one. But this marks the first time Ty Dolla has teamed up with FKA Twigs.
