“Hold Us Together” by H.E.R.

The lyrics of “Hold Us Together” reads as if they are sort of religious in connotation. That is to say that the singer identifies the addressee as being her all, i.e. her life’s “light”, “guide”, “keeper” and “protector”, in addition to serving as an immovable force that is always “good”. But all things considered, who she is actually singing to is another person.  And within the context of the movie this track is featured on, it would most likely be the singer’s caretaker. Indeed it is this person’s strength and efforts which keep the relationship between the two of them “together”.

The songwriter is of a Christian background so the song was more likely written in the context of someone talking about God. I’m sure for the film they assumed it would go over people’s heads that aren’t interested in that, & it would fit the story line enough (there is no one person that can do all of that) to use it. But, Christians can definitely tell it was a song about God.

I’m confused about some of the imagery. Looks like a Gay couple. All the plants and flowers, witchcraft? But the choir points upward as if towards heaven. They can’t satisfy everyone and still be about God.

The song is obviously about God (the writer is literally a Christian and the lyrics are pretty obvious about it), but it’s written in a way that the listener can make it mean what they want. It can be to whoever you want it to be

The only sad thing is that people are trying to make this song about God. I do agree that the lyrics do sound Christian like but it’s sad that in an attempt to please everyone some are left in confusion as to what this song is supposed to be about. Regardless if the song writer is Christian or not, the lyrics should be strong enough that no one has to question it. Note to songwriter- if the song is about Jesus just say so but don’t try to please everyone.

      Yes… I totally agree with you…
Just a bit confuse with the lyrics and the video clip…
As a Christian I believe in Christ alone being our
King, Light, Protecter, Keeper and Our Everything.

The song is Christian, but I do agree with your last point. They really should specify who the “You” is.

Why does the song need to be about only one thing? Music is a form of expression. One song can mean one thing to one person, and something else to another. I believe in God, I also believe that we are all to love one another regardless of differences, just the way he loves us. And whoever the song is about, I know that God definitely would use that person to be all those things to another in need because that’s how much he loves us.

Why is it a issue if it was a gay couple?
Isn’t God all about love in whatever forms it represents itself?

  8. G says:

God Loves and accepts us whatever way we are, so whether it’s a gay couple or not should not be an issue?
Who are we to judge are we not gonna be judged on Judgement Day for our Judgemental Tendencies?
God is Love is whatever form it represents itself …

Respectfully…. Does that make any sense to you? God loves us in whatever forms we’re in? While I would I agree that He does loves us… But… Just look at what you’re saying whatever forms… Even nature itself reveals the true order so definitely The Creation represents The Creator … Why then would we want to change or believe He would accepts and tolerate these kinds of behaviors ? To please ourselves? It’s clear to me that most people thinks and believes that God is whatever we make Him to be or it’s Who serves us and not the other way around…. That’s why the world is like this today full of so many destructions and all these gruesome deaths because of us… And the foolishness we’re telling ourselves and trying to teach others…. One male to a female…
