“I’m Tired” by Labrinth

As we have expounded upon later in the article, Labrinth is a multi-faceted musician. And one genre he has experienced notable success in is gospel, where his 2019 outing “All for Us”, which falls under that category earned the entertainer a Primetime Emmy Award.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Labrinth's I'm Tired at Lyrics.org.

And even though “I’m Tired”, as classified by Genius, it categorized as a pop song, lyrically it does read like a spiritual, even those of days past. That is to say that as such songs tend to go, first of all the narrative is premised on the vocalist being “tired of tears”. Or put more simply, he’s depressed and comes off as someone who is engaged in a perpetually-uphill. He is in this battle in the pursuit of peace and fulfillment in “this world”.

Or viewed alternatively, he has apparently reached the end of his rope as far as self-confidence and optimism are concerned.

So secondly concerning the gospel-ness of the lyrics, he is calling on the “Lord” for some assistance. Well actually, no requests for divine favor made directly though are implied. So rather what we have here is a vocalist crying out to God. In doing so, he is letting the Most High know that a hard life has defeated him.

The Addressee

Despite the above, the reason this piece doesn’t truly classify as a spiritual is because of its outro. In the outro, the addressee is rather switched to what reads like a loved one of the vocalist. What’s being insinuated this time around is that the singer views their relationship as being a toxic one. However, he does not have the resolve to break free from it on his own.

Thus he is entreating the addressee to “release” him, on top of putting forth that “one day” he will return, better than ever, or something like that.

It is worth noting that this song was created for a specific television program, one which by the way deals heavily with the subject of drug addiction. So it is theoretically possible that said addressee may even be some type of substance the vocalist is addicted to and is trying to overcome said addiction. Or let’s conclude by saying that further understanding of this song, if desired, may require that one actually watch the aforementioned program to get a glimpse of the specific context it is used in.
