Joji – Run
On “Run”, Joji is directly addressing a former romantic interest. And the simplest way to explain his disposition is that he believes they both still have feelings for each other. In fact these emotions are so powerful that even though they have already broken up, they are still ‘running’ from each other in their respective regards. In her case, the situation reads as if she is cleaving to a new lover even though she’s not feeling him as much as she did Joji when they were together. And in his case, he comes off as if he is making a conscientious effort not to give in to the temptation to go back to her.
But at the same time his message is two-fold. For by the time the song concludes, it can be seen that he has given in to these feelings and is now searching to re-establish their romance.
So in trying to derive a linear storyline from Joji’s “Run”, the romantic tale featured therein reads as follows:
The singer and his significant other had broken up. Afterwards she got involved with someone new, perhaps in an effort to forget about him, and he likewise took measures to “run” from her. But ultimately he has come to realize that his love for her is too strong and now wants to get back with her.
