“Ew” by Joji

Although “Ew” is said to be based on Joji’s past relationships, the lyrics read as if he is only addressing one person. But verily, said individual would be his ex-girlfriend. And symbolically the wording points to the idea that she may have dumped him. And the whole experience has negatively affected his self-esteem and more to the point warped his perception of love to a significant degree.

Meanwhile the title of the track is not actually present in the lyrics. In a general colloquial sense, ew is an expression of disgust. But it has also been noted that in Vietnam the word for love, yêu, is pronounced just like ew.

This is the opening song on Joji’s album “Nectar”. The labels behind the track are 88rising and 12Tone Music. And they put it out in September of 2020.

The writing team behind this track consists of Joji alongside several others, including the likes of:

  • Craig Balmoris
  • Caloway
  • Daniel Krieger
  • Stuart D. Johnson
  • Antoine Norwood
  • Lucas Szulansky

One of the track’s producers, Bēkon, also co-penned this song.

And the other producers are a musical pair known as The Donuts (S. Gherman and T. Mehlenbacher).
