“Modus” by Joji

On “Modus”, Joji is criticizing the way he is being treated by his employers, so to speak.  More macrocosmically, he is commenting on the way the music industry treats popular artists. And what he is basically saying is that they are treated like machines. In other words, they are expected to always be productive and emotionless, as in not displaying any distraught albeit genuine feelings.

And ultimately, as presented, the situation reads as if they are afforded little to no freewill. Moreover, the music-industrial complex is portrayed as an entity whose appetites are never satiated, to the dismay of the artist himself. So the purpose of this song can be perceived as Joji’s airing out of the frustrations he feels as a successful industry artist.

The creation of this song was mainly a two-man process, as it was written and produced by Joji and Stint, with the latter artist also producing the track.

“Modus” came out on 25 September 2020 as part of Joji’s studio album entitled “Nectar”.  And the labels that put it out are 88rising in conjunction with 12Tone Music.
