“I Like America & America Likes Me” is a song by the Manchester based pop/rock band, The 1975. In an interview with Pitchfork, the lead vocalist of the band, Matty Healy, revealed that the song started out as a homage to SoundCloud rap.

SoundCloud rap (also sometimes called Mumble Rap or Emo Rap) is a type of rap music that was birthed on the famous music sharing/audio distribution website, SoundCloud. This type of rap is often simple and rife with lyrics which aren’t easy to understand.

In talking about song, Healy further stated that to him, the current sound of America is SoundCloud rap. Owing to this, he and the other members of The 1975 apparently decided to pen a befitting tribute to this genre of rap music currently sweeping America.
