“Joan of Arc” by Little Mix
“Joan of Arc” is the title of a 2018 single by the British girl group Little Mix. The lyrics of “Joan of Arc” center on feminist themes ranging from self love to female independence to female empowerment.
In the song’s pre chorus, the narrators compare themselves to the likes of Joan of Arc, Cleopatra and Queen of Hearts. The former two are among the most powerful women of all time. The former is a very powerful female monarch from the fictional story Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
The song’s chorus finds the girl group talking about how they are so independent they don’t need men in their lives. They don’t need money from any man because they can afford to buy whatever beautiful thing they want. They conclude the chorus with the profound line:
“If I’m loving you, it’s cause I can”
Who is Joan of Arc?
Joan of Arc (also known as “The Maid of Orléans“) was a young French peasant girl who surprised the world by becoming one of the greatest heroines of all time. From a very young age, Joan believed she was chosen by God to guide and lead her country France to victory during its war with in England (the Hundred Years’ War). Joan eventually went on to lead the French army to a resounding victory over England. On May 23, 1430, Joan was captured by the forces of the English. 7 days after her capture, Joan was burned at the stake. She was only 19 years old when she was killed. Today, Joan of Arc is considered one of history’s most powerful and inspirational female leaders.
In this song, Little Mix just wants the world to know that they feel as remarkably powerful and independent as the heroine Joan of Arc aka The “The Maid of Orléans”. What could depict more feminine power than this remarkable French woman?!
