“My Hero” by Westlife

Of course any song dropped in the year 2021 based on the concept of heroism is likely meant to serve as a shoutout to individuals who stepped up during the COVID-19 pandemic. And such is how Westlife, at least in theory and in part, conceptualized “My Hero”.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Westlife's My Hero at Lyrics.org.

However that first-responder aspect, if you will, doesn’t really come through in the lyrics. Rather, the featured narrative reads as if it is highly personal. Put simply, the addressee is someone who the vocalist is very close to and has been for some time, i.e. the most devoted loved one in his life.

And basically, what the singer is saying is that this individual has been with him through thick and thin, even at times when he may have clearly been at fault or in trouble. Also, the addressee is the kind of person whose presence makes the narrator “feel strong”. And that is why the Westlife gang is proclaiming this individual as a “hero” in their eyes. The addressee may not even know the profoundness of the effect he or she has on the vocalist’s life.

But again, it’s like just his or her presence alone can prevent an internal crisis in the singer’s life from turning into a catastrophe.

In Conclusion

So conclusively, we’ll say that “My Hero” reads a lot like a love song, one of those types whereas the object of the vocalist’s affection is presented as a savior in his life. However, there is no romantic element to these lyrics. Therefore, a variety of different types of individuals, even first responders theoretically, can fit the bill in regards to the “hero” being referred to, respectively depending on the person who is relaying this message.

“My Hero” and Westlife

On the date of 5 November 2021, East West Records issued this song as the second single from Westlife’s “Wild Dreams” album. Of course Westlife is a boy band that has been in the game since their 1999, self-titled debut effort, which was a major success.

And even though the aughts was definitely their decade and they took most of the 2010s off, this group, who are from Ireland, have firmly established themselves as mainstays in the music industry. For instance, their most recent studio album, 2019’s Spectrum, was Westlife’s least successful commercially yet still managed to top the UK (and Irish and Scottish) Albums Chart.

Westlife has consisted of the same four vocalists throughout its entire tenure, who are as follows:

  • Nicky Byrne
  • Kian Egan
  • Markus Feehily
  • Shane Filan

Originally the group was a quintet. But its fifth original member, Brian McFadden, bounced to start a solo career in 2004. This was during the era in which the band was more or less at its peak.

Westlife debuted “My Hero” on 4 November 2021. The debuting of the song took place at at an event known as the Pride of Britain Awards.

Another really famous singer from Western Europe, Ed Sheeran, is credited as a co-writer of “My Hero”. And so is his countryman and ultra-successful British behind-the-scenes’ musician, Steve Mac.
