“My Skin My Logo” by Solange (Ft. Gucci Mane)
First off it should be noted that this song is a lot more difficult to decipher than others. On one hand, the lyrics are simple and repetitive. Yet on the other, they feature the heavy usage of colloquialisms which seem cliquish, as in only the people who actually composed the track may understand what they truly mean. That said, the overall theme of the song seems to be an assertion by the artists to do things their way.
Moreover, their personal styles seem to be heavily influenced by fashion, particularly of the Gucci variety. They also appear to make references alluding to the enjoyment of playing sports, specifically basketball in a case of Gucci who is known to have skills for an entertainer.
But again there are other parts, such as references to “candy paint” and “wood grain”, which are harder to derive meaning from, although one possibility is that during when the artists correlate these two terms they are referring to tattoos. However, all things considered this song seems more than anything like an espousing of the Gucci brand, with both artists more or less having a history of doing so in the past despite the fact that neither are actually currently contracted by the company.
2nd Interpretation (Possible Meaning of “My Skin My Logo”)
Having said all the above, it is also possible Solange is just using this song to let the world know that she’s black and proud of the complexion of skin God blessed her with.
