“Recess” by Melanie Martinez

Like many of Melanie Martinez’s songs, “Recess” comes at us from a number of different angles. The title alludes to her needing a break from toxic associations, as in predatory, associates in her life. Indeed such relationships are seemingly a contributing factor to her suffering from depression, as in being unable to enjoy, from an emotional standpoint, the fruits of her labor.

And the whole experience of such has led her to remember advice her grandmother gave her when she was but a child. And what he grandma told her, succinctly put, is to not let such people into her head. Instead when faced with these situations she should proclaim “recess”, as in boldly disassociating herself from such individuals.

So the overall insinuation is that Melanie intends to practice this philosophy from henceforth.

I like to relate songs to my life. So for Recess I relate it to me being anxious/stressed/depressed. “People gonna say, if you need a break someone’ll take your place.” Like so many lines in the sign can pertain to my life. And no, I’m not diagnosed, but I’m going to the doctor soon. So I’ll come back with the results. The reason I claim those things is because I feel those things every single day of my life. Disdain is prevalent, those things are prevalent, my life will never be the same.

love how she used a harp in the background, you never really hear it in songs
