“She’s All I Wanna Be” by Tate McRae

Two things are established reading in between the lines of the first verse of “She’s All I Wanna Be”. First is that the vocalist is addressing her significant other. And second would be Tate McRae is under the impression that her sweetheart is more interested in another girl than he is in her.

And the vocalist proceeds to list various reasons why she is under this impression throughout the verses.  On top of the generally f–ked up feeling of knowing your partner prefers someone else, her alarm is exacerbated by the fact that she cannot actually compete with this lady for the addressee’s heart. But why can’t she compete with this woman? The simple answer is because the woman has “got everything” that Tate doesn’t.

Just to note, this doesn’t really seem to be about the other woman’s looks (like in the case of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene“). In Tate’s case, it appears it has more to do with the woman’s wealth. And if so, then yes dear reader, this may be the first time we’ve actually come across a song where a lady is lamenting the prospect of having her man taken away by a rich woman.

So that would then of course bring us to the title, which is representative of the vocalist’s reaction to this malady. She is obviously pissed with the addressee, referring to him as a “stupid boy” and all. But as far as the thesis sentiment goes, what Tate is actually wishing is that she could be more like this other woman. That way, the implication is that then the addressee would be just as in love with her as he is with the next chick. But even beyond that, it seems that the vocalist also may be a bit envious of homegirl’s wealth.

I feel it too sometimes, but it’s important to remember that if the person we like doesn’t like us back, then they’re not the right one for us. Comparing ourselves to others only makes miserable feelings, to receive and give love we have to know we are enough. Your not alone, and you are loved even if you don’t know it.

    tate mcrae so relatable 🙂
if you look at the music vid though, she’s jealous of the girl but at the end they come to terms that they’re both just people. it looks like they become friends at the end
i just wanna say you’ll someday realize that you don’t need to compete. you are just as valuable and talented as the other person you’re jealous of <33
