“Shouldn’t Couldn’t Wouldn’t” by 88rising, NIKI & Rich Brian
NIKI controls most of the airtime on “Shouldn’t Couldn’t Wouldn’t”. And she plays the role of a lady in a romance that is obviously coming to an end. Or more specifically, she has come to the realization that she cannot continue forward with her current partner. And basically, this is due to being a victim of unrequited love. Or as the story plays out, it appears that her boyfriend is reluctant towards actually committing to her. This point is driven home more effectively when Rich Brian enters the song.
He plays the role of NIKI’s romantic interest. And honestly, the best way to describe his character is perhaps as one who is very much attached to her from a sexual standpoint. But outside of that, he doesn’t seem overly eager to commit. And he understands that this is causing discontent in the relationship, specifically in terms of them regularly communicating (as in she habitually ex-communicates him). And this is on top of him also apparently not reaching out as often as he should.
So the song ultimately concludes with the same sentiment NIKI expresses throughout, which is that there relationship “shouldn’t be this hard” to maintain. And as such, she seems emotionally prepared to bring the entire association to an end.
