“Six Feet Apart” by Alec Benjamin

This song is based on two premises. One is that it was written directly within the context of the 2020 pandemic and resultant social-distancing guidelines recommended by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention. Or stated otherwise, the CDC is in fact advising, in light of the spread of the sickness, that certain individuals literally remain “six feet apart”.

Now with that in mind, the second premise is that in adhering to the this rule, the singer himself cannot be in direct physical proximity of his significant other.  Thus the primary focus of the lyrics center on him lamenting this reality.  And most of the colorful metaphors used throughout lend to the less-than-favorable fact that whereas he is able to behold her beauty, unfortunately due to maintaining the “six feet apart” he cannot actually touch her.

So as Alec has expressed in his explanation of this track, it is very much based in the prevailing reality of the moment. In fact even in years to come people may be able to listen to this song and get a feel of how some people, from a social perspective, felt once the pandemic hit the United States.

A song inspired by a pestilence

Alec Benjamin has stated directly that this track was “inspired by the global pandemic of 2020. According to him, he wrote it “about social distancing and feeling isolated”.  Moreover he wanted his fans not to feel as if they are “alone” in what they may be going through in terms of social-distancing rules. And in terms of this song, he also ‘hopes that it makes them feel a little less lonely’.
