“Shadow of Mine” by Alec Benjamin
You ever hear that old adage ‘you can run from anyone but yourself’? Such is the premise upon which this song (“Shadow of Mine”) is based. The vocalist comes off as the type of individual who was formerly under the impression that if he did things like change his location and excommunicate his homeys, then he would experience desired internal change.
However, he has come to the conclusion that achieving true personal transformation is more complicated than that. That’s because “the devil” which plagues him, as alluded to, actually exists within. This is what the vocalist is referring to as his “shadow”, further connoting that this relationship, if you will, as it currently stands is an inescapable aspect of his existence.
