“Change My Clothes” by Dream & Alec Benjamin

The titular phrase (“Change My Clothes”), as used in its entirety in the chorus, is meant to point to the idea of the vocalist(s) perceiving himself as being by and large incompetent. And yes, such a less-than-favorable self-image is obviously indicative of an overall lack of confidence.

But he is not revealing this side of himself just for revealing’s sake. Rather what this song is premised on is the vocalist’s desire to pursue some type of dream which would require him to make a major, faith-based power move.

But as implied above, initially he is lacking the adequate sureness of self to do so. Or as he puts it, he ‘can’t even change his own clothes’. That is to say that the singer presents himself as sort of a klutz, albeit one with big dreams.

But this song isn’t all pessimism throughout. For later in the chorus, instead of resolving to accept his incompetency as the norm, the singer realizes that he must endeavor harder towards improving himself.

Also in the bridge, he comes to the conclusion that it would be better if he set off towards his lofty goal and fail as opposed to not trying at all. For he is able to realize that if he doesn’t make the aforementioned power move, then he will spend the rest of his life thinking what if. Simply put, he doesn’t want to be forever trapped in a mental “jail” that be put himself into.

What “Change My Clothes” is all about

So perhaps the most general way of classifying this piece is as a song of inspiration. Dream and Alec Benjamin don’t come across like most pop singers, i.e. as being super confident.

Instead this song speaks more to the timid at heart. But that said, by the time all is said and done it’s still concluded that bravely facing one’s destiny and making the necessary improvements to effectively bring it to pass, even if things don’t materialize as idealized, is better than backing away from one’s calling.
