Alec Benjamin’s “Must Have Been the Wind” Lyrics Meaning

The story being told in Alec Benjamin’s “Must Have Been the Wind” is rather simple to follow. While sleeping in his apartment, the singer hears a commotion going on in the one above his and what sounds like a “girl” crying.

So he goes up to investigate. Upon responding to him knocking on the door, the selfsame girl instructs Alec that what he actually heard “must have been the wind”.  In other words, according to her, what he perceived acoustically as a conflict is not what he actually heard. So inherently, he should go on about his business.

Thus Alec returns to his own crib but is still plagued by a feeling of uneasiness. He is convinced of what he overheard and as such cannot rest comfortably. So he returns to the girl’s apartment, where she once again reassures him that she is okay.

Yet Alec knows what he actually perceived. So once he gets back to his own place and starts blasting Bill Withers’ classic “Lean on Me” (1972), a song which most people already know its basic meaning. And his goal is for her to also receive the message that if she is trouble, he is there to help. But even while making this effort to assuage her suffering, he is more or less convinced that when they meet in the future she will continue to assure him that what he heard “must have been the wind”.

the reason she assured him it was just the wind and refused the help because sometimes it is safer for the victim to remain silent until the abuser is away. I had to do that myself.

That’s so sad but I get why people do that. Sometimes it feels more comfortable and safe to do it that way.

I am now a teenager but I have had to say “It must have been the wind” for 8 years. I was abused by my father. I was scared and could never tell anyone. Eventually, I told my mom and she got me and my siblings out of the situation. I have been living with her for 5 years now. He was given the right to call us in 2018. He called for the first 2 years and then stopped. I was happy, slept well at night ad even got off the medicine. We had no contact with him for 2 and a half years. Then he started calling and even texting again. I can’t really do much because I am underage but my two older siblings have gotten away from him and even changed their names. I have a great relationship with my stepdad and he really wants to adopt me but can’t without a court order. I am currently fine but I really relate to this song.

  2. Nunya says:

She didn’t talk about her abuse for a reason. Either she was threatened/ scare by her abuser or she had a trauma bond. Which is really sad and I hate that this is how our world is.

  4. Suicidal Queen says:

If she had told him, he could’ve helped her but I understand why she told him it was the wind. Though it’s nice to know that he cared

  5. @ says:

    Yeah, that makes sense.

  6. Limewire says:

I mean if you hear the lyrics, she said that they can be friends and he can come in so I think maybe the girl had a break up argument or something in the long run

    • Anonymous says:

there was the sound of a glass bottle shattering according to alec in the lyrics, that suggest domestic abuse i dont think it was just a break up argument

    • Anonymous says:

An argument doesn’t require broken bottles for there to be resolution. It’s definetly hinting at domestic abuse, especially adding to the fact that the victim in the song answered the door with a “sweater zipped up to her chin.”

It’s actually Alec imagining himself telling the girl that she can come over to his place. Kind of like a safe zone so she can have a break from the fighting and that they can talk about the “wind”. The last chorus of “It must have been the wind” is him saying those words back to her letting her know that she doesn’t have to say anything until she’s ready.

  12. Peter says:

This song is basically a response to the song Luka by Suzanne Vega
His song is from his POV as the neighbor who lives below her whereas “Luka” lives on the second floor and her song is saying sorry for all the commotion and telling her neighbor to not worry

awesome lyrics! the reason for her saying it must have been the wind” which obviously a lie but domestic abuse as far as the first amendment goes she has the right of speech therefore he/she is infringing her right of speech, so in this situation the police would be a bad idea as they would probably get the situation aggressive to fast , the best option would to talk to her and the after multiple atemps to get her out get a “side arm” as a pistol not rifle then ask her again but tell her to back away from the dorway *this is after you’ve found proof of the abuse* kick it open and clear the room. but that’s just me 😉 good use of our second amendment “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed”;)

I love this song and have been an alec fan since 2018. My first concert was actually his earlier this year in boise idaho! (It was spectacular!!!!) Anyways, I was talking about this song with my boyfriend and he was like, “You know this song is about abuse right?” And I just stopped and thought about it for the rest of the day. I kept on listening to the song and it slowly started making more sense. I honestly didnt understand until my boyfriend told me that, and now i am glad to understand because now i can relate to it more. when i was younger one of my family members did something they werent supposed to do. Thats what this song makes me think about. That is why I love alec so much! I relate to him so much and he has saved me from so much. Thank you alec! <3 P.S when your childhood is really over while you get older, hopefully you dont kill someone for someone by then, you death will really be the death of a hero!!!!!!

  23. says:

When in an abusive relationship, ranging from your partner of preferred gender is physically abusing you to your father is verbally and emotionally abusing you, as well as many other forms of abuse, sometimes you can’t say or it’s literally just a bad time to say.
Like, I have an abusive father(He’s no longer physically abusive and still a peice of shit but he got new meds and is doing better, so now I’m safer) and I couldn’t say “My dad is abusive and I’m scared of him” but I could say “Yeah, my dad isn’t really all to great, he just makes a public persona ya know?” I could hint that my dad was abusive, but I a̶m̶ was so terrified of him I couldn’t bring myself to find the reward of being freed from him greater than him possibly finding out and being worse. Sometimes, while yes the abuser being there and will know, you are so scared of them that you can’t being yourself to tell people outright because of the “what if they find out” mentality. Basically, you get stuck in survival mode on constant, and learn that it will get worse if they find out you told, so you just don’t, or say so discreetly, to keep yourself safer. In the song, while it’s not specified that the abuser was by the girl, the girl was at least scared enough of the abuser that she didn’t say she was being abused outright.
While yes, saying you’re being abused in a domestic abuse case is better, and complying to the person/people helping you so you csn get out faster and make a case sooner is better, sometimes the pros get outweighed by the cons of it getting worse and whatever else may happen as punishment.
