“Snowman” by Sia

Lyrically, Sis’s “Snowman” is somewhat reminiscent, perhaps even inspired by, a classic Christmas cartoon called Frosty the Snowman (1969). That is to say that both works of art center on a sentient Snowman in danger of melting. But in Sia’s case, this character also serves as a metaphor for her boyfriend. And basically, his melting is symbolic of him actually experiencing some type of emotional breakdown. So the singer has tasked herself with uplifting him, primarily through her unwavering commitment to love him and remain by his side.

This track originally came out on 10 November 2017. It is part of a holiday album Sia released that year, via Monkey Puzzle Records and Atlantic Records, entitled “Everyday Is Christmas”. And whereas the tune did chart in six different countries, it didn’t really catch on until around Christmastime, 2020.  That’s when the song went viral on TikTok as part of what is referred to as the Snowman Challenge, in which participants are tasked with singing an entire verse of “Snowman” in a single breath.

Lior Molcho directed the music video to “Snowman”, which utilizes an animation technique known as Claymation. And the said clip did not come until October of 2020.
