“Stop Snitchin” by YG

As the title implies, the primary purpose of “Stop Snitchin” is to serve as YG’s protest against the act of snitching, a colloquial term which refers to a person giving up incriminating information on his companions in the name of saving himself from trouble. More specifically, YG uses this track to attack what he refers to as “bitch ni**as”, i.e. guys who fail to live up to the machismo-based code of the streets, especially within the context of them being snitches.

Rap music, as a genre, has long idolized criminal activity, with even YG himself boasting in this track that he “had to bag up weight”, insinuating that he once sold illicit drugs. As such, ‘snitches’ are widely frowned upon in the hip-hop community. And for the first time in the history of rap music, we have a major artist, Tekashi 6ix9ine, ‘snitching’ on his gang affiliate homeys in order to prevent likely spending the majority of his life in prison. Indeed Tekashi and YG already had a pretty-heated beef prior to the former’s current situation. As such, this track is aimed specifically at dissing Tekashi, with the latter half of the first verse in particular being dedicated to that cause. In fact it is highly-possible that YG’s inspiration for writing this track was primarily to attack 6ix9ine.

Another artist he references via this song (though not directly through the lyrics) is Skinnyfromthe9.  This is allegedly due to a leaked video which shows Skinny “cooperating with police”.

But as aforementioned, most of the (non-chorus) lyrics of this track are not actually related to snitching. Outside of attacking Tekashi, the main subject is just YG’s overall ‘hatred’ of “bi*ch ni**as”.  And what he dislikes about them in particular is their propensity to “snitch”.

Facts about “Stop Snitchin”

  • As aforementioned, YG and Tekashi 6ix9ine already had beef, which included the exchange of some very-personal disses and a near altercation between 6ix9ine and some homeys of YG. This was before Tekashi even ‘snitched’. And the genesis of this quarrel can allegedly be traced back to 6ix9ine.
  • When YG debuted “Stop Snitchin” during the 2019 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, he most-notably projected a giant picture of 6ix9ine’s mugshot while performing and also, as alluded to earlier, a pic of Skinnyfromthe9.
  • In the music video to “Stop Snitchin”, YG portrays himself as a “runaway slave”, with the plot of it being the dangerous effects of snitching within the historical context of African-American slavery.
  • YG wrote “Stop Snitchin” alongside TnTXD and Yung Tago, the two producers of the track.
  • Although YG originally debuted this song during Coachella on 14 April 2019, it was not officially released until 24 April 2019.
