“Valentine’s Day (Shameful)” by Kehlani
As can be noted from the title, this song is in recognition of “Valentine’s Day”, a holiday dedicated to celebrating romantic love. But at the same time we can see that the word “shameful” is attached to it, thus giving the whole occasion a negative feel. And indeed Kehlani is applying this adjective to her ex-boyfriend. And what she is accusing him of most pointedly is using her name for ‘status, fame and recognition’. This would imply that the person she is chastising is indeed someone who is in the public spotlight himself.
In fact later in the song, she references his “label”, which would indicate that he is a musician like her. And all things considered, it doesn’t take a much to conclude that the “shameful” individual she is singing about is a rapper by the name of YG whom she began dating in mid-2019. Indeed their romance was not even able to endure an entire year before she called it quits. And just as the song implies, what was said to be the issue that drove them apart was YG fooling around with another woman/women.
Purpose of “Valentine’s Day (Shameful)”
So the ultimate purpose of this track seems two-fold. On one hand Kehlani clearly wanted to air YG out. And she did so along the lines that lovers sometimes tend to when they part ways under less-than-favorable circumstances. But secondly is that the singer obviously wants, to some degree, to capitalize off of her association with him also. And she made sure to do so while their romance or whatever you want to call it was still trending. In fact the couple recently dropped a song together on Valentine’s Day itself, just a few days prior to the release of this very track.
So obviously this particular episode in their saga is part of a healing process for the songstress whose also had well-publicized relationship issues with other guys she’s dealt with in the past.
