“Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)” by The 1975

As usual, The 1975 have dropped a song with relatively-complex lyrics as compared to some of the other tracks that are out there. But once you get past the poetic lyricism, what it appears as if we’re dealing with here, as implied by the title, is an unrequited love. Simply put, the singer is trying to get with a particular lady, that being the addressee. However, she does not come off as being keen on the idea of entertaining him in that sort of way. And again, the narrative isn’t necessarily straightforward in nature.  But what seems to be going down is that the narrator is doing himself more harm than good in trying to rush a relationship with her, even wanting to get it on this very night.

So conclusively, this song can perhaps best be classified as one centered on frustration.  Yes, it is pretty obvious that the singer is in love, if you will, with the addressee. But more to the point is, at least at this very moment and for whatever reason, there appears to be zero possibility of her granting him to opportunity to get romantically involved.

The 1975 (MacDonald, Hann, Daniel and Healy) wrote this song alongside another artist called No Rome.

Daniel and Healy are also the producers of the track.

“Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)” came out on 22 May 2020 as part The 1975’s “Notes on a Conditional Form”. And the labels that put it out are Polydor Records, Interscope Records and Dirty Hit.
