“Versions of Me” by Anitta

The title and cover art to this song(“Version of Me”)/album is actually meant to point to the fact that Anitta has undergone a number of plastic surgeries in the name of beautifying herself. Of course, such procedures are more or less commonplace in the entertainment industry, especially amongst women therein.

However, it’s as if most celebrities who have done so try to front like they didn’t. But according to PopSugar, Anitta is the type who “lives unapologetically”. As such, the songstress has been quite frank in revealing that she has gone under the knife on numerous occasions.

But that noted, the lyrics aren’t about plastic surgery at all. Or if anything, it can be taken that Anitta’s tendency to alter her appearance has something to do with the fact that, as presented, the vocalist possesses a split personality, i.e. different “versions of” herself.  And to illustrate this point, she specifically utilizes a romantic context.

As presented, what the vocalist is basically telling the addressee, her lover(s), is that he shouldn’t get too attached. That’s because Anitta has a tendency to sporadically spaz. Or put alternatively, she likes playing mind games, as illustrated most explicitly in the second verse, with her romantic prey. It’s like she gets them attached and then just like that, starts wrecking their sh** or just leaves them cold.

Takeaway

So what this song consists of is a female playa, if you will, reveling in her lifestyle. The concept of being in an “open relationship”, as they are called, is currently trending in the United States. So whereas the industry standard may be more along the lines of female vocalists presenting themselves as monogamous, committed lovers, in more recent times we’ve been coming across songs like these, where they rather seem to celebrate being the opposite.
