“Fast Times” by Sabrina Carpenter

What Sabrina Carpenter is speaking to, though specifically put into a romantic context, is how in youthful mistakes will be made. Or more accurately put, being young is not a time in life where we tend to really think things through before acting.

She is illustrating this reality via her relationship with the addressee, who reads like a romantic interest Sabrina doesn’t really know very well. However, being guided by her heart, she has decided to get down with the addressee anyway.

And that is what the vocalist means by “these are fast times”. Most comprehensively put, she’s at the stage in her life where certain important decisions, such as who to fall in love with, are made more based on impulsiveness than wisdom and experience. And being that she’s young and all, the implied conclusive sentiment is that the vocalist should not be judged for behaving in such a manner.

Sabrina Carpenter, "Fast Times" Lyrics

Sabrina Carpenter and “Fast Times”

Sabrina wrote this song with John, J.P. Saxe and Julia Michaels, with the latter two reportedly being close friends of the singer. Accordingly, Carpenter described the process as one in which they ‘weren’t taking themselves too seriously’. The other co-writer of this piece is John Ryan, who also produced “Fast Times”.

Sabrina is a singer/actress who owes her come-up, in part, to the Disney circuit. She has been releasing studio albums since 2015. Her sophomore effort, 2016’s Evolution is the most-successful of the four projects she has dropped thus far.  Her name garnered additional popularity in 2021 when she was caught up in the love triangle that resulted in Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License“, one of the biggest hits of that year.

“Fast Times” is a track which Island Records made public on 18 February 2022.

The single Sabrina came out with prior to this one, in late 2021, was “Skinny Dipping“. The music video to that track features a reference to “Fast Times”. And both of these clips were directed by the same individual, Amber Park.

I’ve loved Sabrina since I was about 5 (which is when gmw came out) and my favorite album was Eyes Wide Open for at least 5 years (but then my mom left the cd in her old car that we sold and I never got a new one) but her songs have been getting kinda strange. like, her music grows as her fans grow. I remember being really excited when she dropped new music and new movies but now I’m just used to it. plus, the drama with Olivia Rodrigo last year was annoying. Joshua was too old for Bolivia anyway, she needed ti get over it. Sabrina didn’t need to get in the drama, she could’ve just ignored it– but at least we now have an amazing song about not letting people get under our skin– and moved on with her life. I still love her so much tho!!!!

Since you were 5.. how old are you? Must be really young for that mindset. Josh was only 3 years older than her and she was almost 18. And for someone to just “get over it.” Really? The drama was dumb, but to say someone should just get over their heartbreak is immature.

Hopefully this girl does not succumb to the Hollywood culture for gains such as popularity and riches. Such things are fleeting and I sincerely wish more people understood this.
