“Anyway” by Gabrielle Aplin

Comprehensively making sense of Gabrielle Aplin’s “Anyway” requires the listener to read in between the lines and also use a bit of imagination, especially as far as the first verse is concerned. What is more readily ascertainable though is that the addressee is seemingly a romantic interest of the vocalist, more specifically being her ex.

And to make a long story short, what Gabrielle is doing conclusively is lamenting having apparently dumped this person, i.e. permanently “walking away” from him.

At the end of the day, it appears that the primary reason she feels this way is because said ex was someone that she could freely talk to, having been ever receptive to the complex person that is the vocalist. But now that attentive, caring ear is no longer in her life, as Aplin did not fully appreciate the privilege when it was present. So to make matters worse, she has to deal with the fact this situation is so by her own doing.

“‘Cause I don’t wanna talk about it anyway
Anyway, anyway, I’m feeling
(I wanna talk to you!)
Even if I got so much to say
Anyway, anyway
I wish you could see me today”
