Meaning of “Call Me” by Gabrielle Aplin

“Call Me” is another song in which Gabrielle Aplin goes about addressing an ex she jilted. Actually, it’s never specified or even inferred per se that their relationship was a romantic one. But whoever this person may be, it is someone close enough to the singer to truly ‘know who she is’.

So the vocalist goes about begging this addressee’s forgiveness. This is under the impression of he or she knowing that Gabrielle isn’t as “terrible” as she may seem sometimes, i.e. being a better person than the side of her character which destroyed this relationship.

The one time it is sorta implied that the addressee is a romantic interest is when Aplin clarifies that this person is “what (she) really wanted”. That reads like a conclusion someone may come to after cheating on their significant other and then realizing that doing so was a mistake.

But again, the vocalist doesn’t really harp on their past relationship besides verifying, in the bridge, that she did in fact do the addressee, who treated her with “kindness”, dirty.

So as with “Don’t Know What I Want“, the track that precedes “Call Me” on the playlist Phosphorescent, this one also centers on the narrator trying to make things right with a loved one she vexed away.  And in this particular case, she is letting said individual that anytime he or she decides to call or visit would be the right time.

“Call me
My door’s always open
And my phone’s always on
Call me”
