“Don’t Know What I Want” by Gabrielle Aplin

It can be said that the chorus of “Don’t Know What I Want” contradicts its verses. According to the latter, the vocalist mistreated the addressee, who is apparently her ex, to the point that they proceeded to break up. So now she is apologetic, wanting to rectify the situation, as in being granted his full forgiveness.

The chorus also goes on to state plainly that she still ‘wants’ him. But what is more forcefully expressed in the passage and as also indicated by the title is that in actuality, the vocalist ‘doesn’t know what she wants’.

Reading in between the lines, perhaps what Gabrielle is saying is that she desires to be friends with the addressee, i.e. making it such that meeting him isn’t emotionally painful and that the memories of her past transgressions against this person no longer haunt her. However, it may not be that she actually wants to go back to having an actual romantic relationship with him. Or at least, that seems like the most-logical way of comprehensively making sense of the conflicting emotions being presented here.

“I don’t know what I want
Don’t know what I want
I don’t know what I want, I want you
I don’t know what I want
Don’t know what I want
I don’t know what I want, I want you”
