“Brightside” by Halestorm

As has been noted before in this blog, hard rock artists especially seem to have this tendency to release songs criticizing, as put in this case, the “messed up world” that we live in. And they do so not purely in an analytical sense but rather by alluding to how the everyman is affected in the grand scheme of things.

In this case (“Brightside”), what Halestorm seems to be speaking to is feeling like sh*t on the inside yet being so accustomed to such an emotion that it becomes the norm. Or at least that would be the implication, that even though this song is firmly relayed from a first-person perspective, the vocalist is speaking to a reality that transcends her personal experience.

And concerning the title/chorus, what Lzzy is saying is that even amidst her harrowing depression, she remains optimistic that a brighter day will materialize. The further implication, as illustrated by the assertion “we all need something to keep us feeling, ‘cause it only gets darker”, is that she doesn’t actually believe such will materialize. But rather, the narrator is compelled to exercise some degree of positivity thinking, because if not, then the depression which dwells internally will really take over.

Credits

Lzzy Hale and Scott Stevens were responsible for the song’s composition. The duo are therefore the song’s only writers. Brightside‘s production duties, on the other hand, was accomplished by an American record producer by the name of Nick Raskulinecz. Nick accomplished this task with assistance from one of the co-writers of “Brightside”, Stevens.

It should be noted that throughout the course of his career, Stevens has worked quite extensively with Halestorm. For example, he has penned multiple number 1 hits for the band. One such hit was 2015’s “Amen”.
