“I Come First” by Halestorm 

There are certain themes that permeate throughout Halestorm’s “Back from the Dead” album, which also appear in this song (“I Come First”). One of them would be Lzzy Hale’s strong inclination towards personal liberation, i.e. not being someone who likes to be told what to do. And second is the notion that she doesn’t appreciate people trying to intervene in her life. That is to say that the vocalist doesn’t like others and then trying to “change” her into something she is not.

And the way Lzzy encapsulates those positions is by asserting that she “come(s) first”. That’s another way of saying that, furthermore, the vocalist is not keen on being victimized. So for example, you shouldn’t expect anything from her that you’re not willing to give in return. And also, as put forth earlier, no one should try to make Lzzy their cause. She’s not going to accept help from someone just to be simultaneously ‘shamed’ in the process.

With all of that being said, what makes “I Come First” unique is that this is really the only song on the tracklist of “Back from the Dead” that can be read as if the vocalist is addressing a romantic interest. The entire piece doesn’t come off as so. But the chorus and especially first verse can kinda be interpreted that way. Yet in any event as depicted, Lzzy is a firebrand when it comes to protecting herself.

Halestorm officially dropped this song alongside its album on May 6 of 2022. The album in question which is titled “Back from the Dead” birthed just two official singles, including

“I Come First” has a total runtime of 3 minutes and 13 seconds. It appears as the ninth song on its album.
