“My Redemption” by Halestorm

For the sake of simplicity, Halestorm’s “My Redemption” can be defined as an anti-religion song. Well, the vocalist does put forth that she has her “own beliefs”. But her belief system centers on a sentiment we come across commonly in songs these days. And most simply explained, that would be a lack of adherence to the general tenets of organized religion, as she feels she doesn’t need them. For instance, such institutions commonly argue that we ought to repent of sins for the sake of spiritual salvation. But by contrast Lzzy Hale feels “no need to confess”, as she is her “own redemption”.

So whereas the lyrics of this piece are straightforward enough, in actuality what’s being put forth is pretty complex to explain. In other words, we may get a glimpse of the philosophy that the vocalist lives by, but in a way, it is never specified what she actually believes foundationally.

For instance, in the post-chorus, the singer states that she ‘don’t need heaven to save her soul’. But then the question becomes, does Lzzy even believe in the existence of “Heaven” and is thus forsaking it, or is she akin to a straight-up atheist?

In any event, as stated earlier, these kinds of assertions are pretty common amongst mainstream artists. But in this case, an entire song has been fashioned around the concept of man, if you will, feeling that salvation lies in his own hands, not in that of a Higher Power.
