Drake’s “Texts Go Green” Lyrics Meaning

The title of this song (“Texts Go Green”) has something to do with the way Apple devices, i.e. the premiere handheld telecommunications’ gadgets currently on the market, tend to display text messages. And apparently, what a green-text bubble points to is the recipient having blocked you, or something to that effect. So with that in mind and also taking the chorus into consideration, what Drake seems to be putting forth is that he has decided to cut off the addressee, his ex.

And that is also the story the first two verses are relaying. As presented, the addressee left Drizzy some time ago. But by the looks of things, she has come to regret that decision. So what the vocalist is basically doing is throwing that reality in her face, that homegirl went from the one doing the dumping to now being in her feelings.

And with this piece being four verses long, it is possible that the rapper is addressing more than one former romantic interest or speaking to the concept of romance more generally than within the context of a single relationship. For instance, in the third verse, Drake seems to be implying that he’s lost faith in romance. And by the time the fourth verse rolls around, instead of portraying the role of the ex who’s happy that the lady who dumped him is now suffering, Drake rather comes off as a man who is open to working things out in a troubled relationship.

In Conclusion

So even though “Texts Go Green” starts off sounding like revenge against an ex, throughout the course of the song it seems that Drake’s true goal is to illustrate the range of emotions associated with romances in which one partner may be more vested than the other. And it can be said that this is particularly from the perspective of someone who knows how it feels when such a relationship goes awry.

Indeed based on the outro, the conclusive sentiment of this topsy-turvy piece would be that the vocalist is the victim of an unreciprocated love or toxic partner.

Remarkable Drake

One thing you have to give to Drake – as a musician who established himself as an A+ lister a long time ago – credit for is that to this day, some 15 years into his very-successful music career, he still comes out with new music regularly, like someone who is just entering the game.

“Texts Go Green”

This track is part of a Drizzy album called “Honestly, Nevermind”. The album came out on 17 June 2002, via OVO and Republic Records, as a surprise release. It should be noted that Drake’s previous studio album, “Certified Lover Boy” (2021), came out less than a year prior.

Drake is the sole credited writer of (“Texts Go Green”), with its producers being Black Coffee and Esona Tyolo.

“Texts Go Green” made headlines – the type we would presume Drake wasn’t looking for – when some listeners have deemed that the rapper, concurrently being 35 years of age, is now too old to be dropping such tracks. And that belief would apparently have something to do with the references to ‘texts going green’.
