Eric Church’s “The Snake” Lyrics Meaning

“The Snake” is the title of a song by American country music singer and songwriter Eric Church. The lyrics of “The Snake” see Church focus all his time condemning America’s divisive politics.

In the song, he compares America’s two major political parties (the Republican Party and the Democratic Party) to dangerous snakes. Hence the song’s title “The Snake”. In addition to likening the Democrat Party and the GOP to snakes, Church goes on to state that their sole objective is to feast on the innocent American electorate.

In the song, Church mentions two types of venomous snakes – the copperhead and the rattlesnake. Which political party is the copperhead? And which is the rattlesnake?

According to Church, neither of these snakes refers to a particular political party. Any of the serpents could be red (Republican Party) or blue (Democratic Party).

In a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Church revealed that he didn’t vote during the 2016 United States presidential election. And why did he fail to exercise his franchise? To him, he saw no difference between the two Presidential candidates: Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

    Y’all got y’alls head in the sand if you think this song is political that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of in my life… whoever come up with the theory that this song is political has way too much time on their hands they should take up a hobby like whittling be way more productive
