The “it” in the title of this song refers to knowledge and wisdom the singer has acquired throughout his life’s journey. And the titular phrase alludes to the different ways he (and others) have gone about attaining such. For instance “some of it” was “learn(ed) the hard way”, while some were “read on a page”. But one thing all of these lessons have in come is that they ‘never come easy’.
The first verse focuses on lessons Eric has learnt about life in general, pertaining to such diverse topics as alcohol consumption, relating to parents and man’s relationship with God. However, by the time the second verse concludes, he is talking specifically about knowledge he has gained in the field of romance. And in that regard, what he has come to adopt is a philosophy tantamount to always being true to the woman you love.
So overall this is a song based on the singer’s hard-fought wisdom, with a special focus on how to treat his significant other right.
