“(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” by Bryan Adams

“(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” is an expression of the singer’s feelings for his significant other, using some of the most-tender lyrics ever. Indeed as the title implies, all of his life’s ambitions are dedicated to pleasing her, and he would do anything in the name of defending and protecting her. Basically, it can be deduced that the wording serves the purpose of convincing her of such. That is the vocalist wants his lady to analyze him thoroughly to see what he is saying is true.

Moreover he asserts that if she searches her own ‘heart and soul’, she will realize that he is present there also. So this doesn’t read like the case of the vocalist trying to persuade a doubtful lover of his feelings for her. Rather their relationship appears to be more solid ground. But more to the point, he wants her to fully understand just how much she means to him.

Facts about “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You”

Amongst Bryan Adams many hits, this is the most well-known. It was issued by A&M Records on the 18th of June 1991. It served as the lead single from two different albums simultaneously. One was the original soundtrack for the movie “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”, starting Kevin Costner. And the other was Bryan’s own sixth album, which is entitled “Waking Up the Neighbours”. On that same project appears another Bryan hit titled “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started“.

To cut right to the chase, “Everything I Do” is one of the biggest hits in the history of the music industry.  For instance, it set a record on the UK Singles Chart by spending 16 weeks in a row on top of the list. Indeed in virtually every country (about 30 according to many reliable sources) it is documented to have charted in. And these include the US and Canada, where it reached number 1. Furthermore, it holds the distinction of being in the very-top tier in terms of physical record sales, having sold in excess of 15,000,000 copies.

Accordingly a plethora of artists have covered it. One of the most notable in that regard was Brandy, who featured her version on her 1999 album Never Say Never.

Did Bryan Adams write “Everything I Do”?

“Everything I Do” was composed by Bryan Adams alongside Robert J. Lange and Michael Kamen, with the former also being the producer of the track.

Actually most of the song was actually written by Kamen, who was tasked with putting together the entire “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (Original Soundtrack)”. And later Adams and Lange added additional content to it. They were able to do so in less than an hour and used a phrase found in the film, “I do it for you”, as a basis. But part of the reason it went on to blow up like it did was because the track doesn’t actually make any direct references to Robin Hood, thus giving it a universal applicability.

In fact the studio behind the film did not fully embrace the song initially, as they wanted one more in line with the script’s medieval theme. That is why they actually placed one of the biggest hits in history in the end credits instead of a more-prominent position in the film.

Music Videos

There are two different music videos to this song.  The standard one was handled by director Julien Temple and features scenes from “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”. And also keeping true to the theme of the film, Adams’ parts were shot partially in the woods of Sheffield, England.

Did Bryan Adams win a Grammy with “Everything I Do”?

It earned a couple of Grammy nominations in 1992. The songwriters eventually took home a Grammy in the category of “Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television”. And the year prior it was also nominated for an Academy Award.
