Indeed when the song begins, we actually find Khalid warning others not to get to close to him. Part of this seems to be based on a belief that he doesn’t actually require such. Such a negative attitude is displayed again when he states that an individual would “need patience” to endure his company. He also mentions “blood” in reference to his character in a manner that insinuates violence, as in a person should be prepared to deal with “pain” when dealing with Khalid. However, the implication is not necessarily that he is genuinely violent, but at the same time he’s not always the best person to be around.

In fact in the pre-chorus, we see that the sentiment he is truly putting forth is that he wants friends who can deal with both his good and bad side. And if a person can’t do so, it would be best to leave him alone. This social reality is based on Khalid being “in love with bad luck”. Within the context of the song, this would seem to indicate that he understands there are some negative aspects of his life/personality and he has just come to embrace them. So if a person gets close to him, they would have to deal with these things likewise.

Lyrics of Bad Luck

In the second verse, we find that Khalid has become an introvert. However, he feels more secure this way, having no one to share in his pain. And even when sympathizers do arise, their sentiments are fake. Instead they are more interested in material gains from associating with him. So all things considered Khalid finds himself alone. And as aforementioned, this is how he actually prefers things – sometimes.

So all in all, an amalgamation of negative thoughts and fake friends find the narrator (Khalid) coming to a sad conclusion that “bad luck” walks with him.
