“Right Back” by Khalid
The meaning of the term “right back”, which is used throughout this song, is not clearly specified. However, it appears to represent a symbolic time and place where Khalid would like to take his woman to. This place is seemingly based on past happiness but even more-importantly future expectations. Indeed the exact location of this emotional rendezvous is not the issue at hand. Rather it is the desired intimate feelings expressed between Khalid and this lady.
As such, at the beginning of the song, we find Khalid at home, chatting with his love interest over the phone. He is definitely excited about the prospect of hooking up with her. So even though he has to endure peak L.A. traffic, he is still dedicated to swinging by, picking her up and showing her around town.
The second verse rather finds them on the beach, smoking and chillin’. Here, Khalid explicitly states that the woman he is addressing is not his girlfriend, nor are they even on an official date. Rather it is someone he is interested in and progressively communicating with, all the while greatly enjoying her company, to ascertain the potential of romantic involvement.
Indeed although he is definitely feeling her, Khalid’s goal is not to get this girl to “stay the night”. Rather it is to entertain her and patiently establish the ideal mood, all with the ultimate goal of bringing her “right back”.
