Whoever said there’s no heartbreak when in a romantic relationship is proven wrong by this track because it’s the exact opposite. In fact, it’s probably the hardest when you realize your significant other is beginning to lose feelings – which is something members of WDW are/were facing when this track was penned.

Verse 2

What I can assume started as a heated argument ultimately led to them “say(ing) sh*t (they) don’t mean at all”. Furthermore, opinions from the addressee’s friends probably made matters worse for the addresser and his partner. From personal experience, this is never a good thing as often, we would put our partners as the ‘bad guy’. This results to opinions received on an unfair case.

With those opinions on the addressee’s mind, it would have impacted their arguments negatively. With such chaos arising constantly, WDW too begins to realize that their feelings have changed towards their partner over the course of being in such a relationship.

Chorus

The chorus shows that the narrator knows a breakup is undeniable. However, accepting it is not something they find easy to do. Two choices are given to their partner – either to lie to them and stay together or let them down easy. This shows they’ve given the cards to their partner, maybe because it’ll be harder for them to end the relationship.

Jonah Marais speaks of the track’s influence

Why Don’t We member and writer of this track, Marais, shared that “Let Me Down Easy (Lie)” portrays a sad, relatable, human experience of being romantically involved with someone when they have diminishing feelings.

On WDW’s TikTok account, Marais posted the inspiration behind the track. According to him, it began when he “started to feel the other person fade away at the end of a relationship and coming to terms with that”.

Release Date

This track was released as a single on 14th April, 2022. A week prior to its release, the band released teasers of the track on their Instagram and TikTok accounts.

Legal Issues

As of the track’s date of release, the band is in the middle of a lawsuit filed in August 2021 against their ex-manager, David Loeffler from Atlantic Records. According to the band, since the start of their contract, they’ve been under “verbal abuse, malnourishment, and ultimate control” by Loeffler, resulting in them refusing to sign on with the label. They are looking to be solely managed by Randy Phillips from Signature Entertainment Partners.

This has resulted in the band postponing their tour ticket sales, which they have publicly announced on their Instagram account.
