Meaning of “Raincatchers” by Birdy

It appears that in context, a “raincatcher” would be someone who is able to stave away depression. And by the looks of things, Birdy is referring to the addressee as such because when he was around, she likewise was happy.

Or as implied in the chorus, the two of them, when they were together, were “the raincatchers”, i.e. enjoying a gratifying life in unison.

So now that the addressee has apparently become her ex, Birdy is in her feelings, once again having become vulnerable to “the rain”, as in depression. So by the time all is said and done, it can be gleaned that the thesis sentiment revolves around her desire for him to return.

“We used to be the raincatchers
And we couldn’t see what we were running from
You made me feel like
Nothing really matters
Here in my dreams, we’re raincatchers
Come back to me like it was before
You made me feel like
Nothing really matters, nothing really matters”

“Raincatchers” served as the lead single to Birdy’s fifth-studio album, a project titled “Portraits”, with Atlantic Records releasing the song as such on 3 March 2023.

Birdy wrote and produced this track with Barney Lister, and Anya Jones served as an additional co-writer.

Raincatchers

What is the meaning of “Raincatchers”?

Actually a “raincatcher” is a system or device designed to catch and collect rainwater. These can range from simple barrels placed under a roof’s downspout to more complex systems integrated into a building’s plumbing system. The collected rainwater can be used for various purposes including watering plants, washing, and even for drinking if it is properly treated. Utilizing a raincatcher can help in conserving water. This is because it reduces our reliance on traditional water sources.

However, in this song by birdy, “raincatcher” means something entirely different. In the lyrics’ framework, a “raincatcher” seemingly refers to an individual capable of warding off depression.

this is not correct, Birdy spoke that it was about two friends drifting apart in a video, it references her best friend, and them making contact again after being out of touch for some time.
