Meaning of “Dancing with Your Ghost” by Sasha Alex Sloan

Usually when we come across the word “ghost” being utilized in song, it doesn’t point to the lingering spirit of a dead person per se. Rather, as with this piece, it tends to allude to the absence of a loved one, i.e. said individual no longer being around, yet their presence still being felt.

So apparently is the case with “Dancing with Your Ghost”, in which it is not specified if said addressee is deceased or not. Indeed, the clever thing about these lyrics, especially as far as the first verse is concerned, is that they can be interpreted either way in that regard.

But more to the point, once again, would be the vocalist suffering in the addressee’s absence. The lyrics do soundly imply that their relationship was a romantic one which, in Sasha’s eyes, ended prematurely and unexpectedly.

And at the end of the day, we can perhaps argue that the addressee is more likely alive than dead. That is to say that what’s being put forth doesn’t, in its entirety, read like a song of bereavement. Instead, it’s more as if the singer is heartbroken.

“I stay up all night, tell myself I’m alright
Baby, you’re just harder to see than most
I put the record on, wait ’til I hear our song
Every night, I’m dancing with your ghost
Every night, I’m dancing with your ghost”
