“Congrats” by LANY
LANY’s “Congrats” is very similar in style to Rihanna’s classic “Take a Bow”. In other words, the title would suggest that the vocalist is complimenting the addressee, who by the way is a former romantic partner of his. But him doing so is actually an act of sarcasm. And what’s really being implied, basically, is that it was said ex’s goal to do him dirty from the jump.
Or let’s say the further implication is that she perhaps cheated on him or “broke his f*-king heart”, as the vocalist puts it. Indeed the things she ended up doing to him were such that Paul did not know, despite being romantically involved with her, that homegirl was “capable” of going “so low”.
Or put more frankly, whatever it is she did which ended up breaking his heart totally blindsided him. And the pre-chorus more bluntly reveals that she did something deceitful, along the lines of ‘lying through her teeth’.
So maybe it can be said that this piece is vengeful in nature. That is to say that there’s only so much a person can do about being cheated on and/or dumped, as appears to be more or less the case here. But the vocalist is at least letting the addressee know, even if in a snarky way, that what she did to him wasn’t right. And for what it’s worth, he is also ‘praying to God’ that karma would come back around and bite her in the ass.

“Congrats”, which was fully introduced to the world on 24 August 2022, marks LANY’s first single since those associated with their fourth studio album, 2021’s gg bb xx, which relatively speaking did not perform too well.
Paul Joseph Klein, who now makes up one half of the crew, co-wrote this song with King Henry and Sasha Alex Sloan. He and his partner, Jake Clifford Goss, are collectively credited with producing the track alongside Mike Crossey.
To note, originally LANY was a three-man act. But one of the group’s co-founders, Charles Leslie Priest, bounced earlier in 2022.
The teasing of this track dates back to June of 2022.
At the time of the release of “Congrats”, it was reportedly the first single from LANY’s fifth studio album.
