“Never Be the Same” is a song performed by Cuban-born American singer and songwriter Camila Cabello. The lyrics of the song are purely about a very addictive romantic relationship between two people. While performing the song live at a concert in Portland, Oregon, United States on July 23rd, 2017, Cabello shed more light on the meaning of the song. Speaking to the audience gathered there, she said the song is about finding someone whom you absolutely love and having your entire life transformed by them.

In an interview with Official Charts, Cabello said the lyrics of “Never Be the Same” perfectly capture the feeling of being in love.

It is noteworthy that the song’s lyrics aren’t about a significant other Cabello was seeing at the time she wrote the song. The singer herself confirmed this during an interview with the New York City based FM radio station WBMP.

In another interview with the British tabloid newspaper The Sun, Cabello said the lyrics are about a former boyfriend who “was not good” for her.

  • “Never Be the Same” was written by Camila Cabello and five other songwriters, including Swedish singer and songwriter Noonie Bao and Canadian songwriter and music producer Frank Dukes, who also co-wrote Cabello’s 2017 smash hit song “Havana“. The three other writers are Sasha Yatchenko, Leo Dawod and Ludwig Olofsson.
  • Record producers Frank Dukes (one of the song’s writers) and Jarami were responsible for the production of the song. “Never Be the Same” was released to the general public on January 9th, 2018 as the second single from Cabello’s debut studio album titled Camila. The first single from that album was “Havana”. The album (Camila) debuted at number one in the United States.
  • According to Cabello, the song was the easiest song she had ever written and that it took her only just an hour to write it as compared to her hit “Havana” whose writing process took a very long time (several months).
  • The lyrics of the song make mention of a number of dangerous drugs, including nicotine and heroin, which Cabello compares her addictive love to. That part of the song was controversial and caused some confusion between Cabello and her parents who strongly disapproved of it. Due to the controversy caused by the inclusion of the aforementioned drugs in the song’s lyrics, the album (Camila) has two versions of the song: one with the controversial line and another (the radio edit version) that is not inclusive of the controversial line.
  • On April 27th, 2018, another version of the song was released. This version featured American country music singer and songwriter Kane Brown.
  • Cabello performed “Never Be the Same” live for the first time on January 10, 2018 on the popular American late-night talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
  • The song peaked at number 7 on the UK Singles Chart and number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100, thereby making it one of the most popular songs of 2018.
