“First Man” by Camila Cabello

As its title implies, most of the songs on Camila Cabello’s “Romance” album are about her romantic relationships. More specifically, she spends the bulk of her time addressing her boyfriends, both past and present. But in “First Man”, the concluding track on the album, the project takes a twist.

In this song, she is rather speaking to her dad. Indeed the titular figure is actually an allusion to her father, for he is “the first man that really loved” her. And the storyline of the song reads like the singer is on the verge of spending her first night out, as in sleepover, with a boyfriend. And this has her dad worried. So she spends a considerable amount of time trying to convince him that he shouldn’t be. Or more to the point, the guy she is going out with is a “good man” who at times even reminds her of her father. And this is an emotional moment for both she and her dad. Or put differently, “First Man” sound sort of like a coming-of-age tale, representing the moment where a father realizes that his daughter has indeed become a woman.

And whereas, as mentioned earlier, he is concerned for her in this situation, overall dad seems cool with letting her do her thing. But the way the story plays out, with this being the first time that the narrator has even seen her father cry, is reminding her just how much he truly loves her.
