Meaning of “Consequences” by Camila Cabello

“Consequences” is ballad by Cuba born American singer Camila Cabello. In this ballad, the narrator (Cabello) sings passionately about dealing with the aftermath of a very intoxicating love affair. And though the relationship has come to an end, she still can’t seem to get her significant other out of her mind. In the song, the singer says loving her ex was, among other things, a dumb, cool, wild and free thing that brought a lot of consequences her way. Hence the song’s title.

During her appearance at the Zach Sang Show, Cabello said in “Consequences”, the narrator isn’t really regretting falling in love with her ex. She’s just trying to deal with the aftermath of the demise of the love. To her, the love was at some point exciting but now “it sucks but it was still worth it”.

In another interview, Cabello referred to this song as a follow-up of the addictive relationship in her earlier song “Never Be the Same”.

Cabello’s Intentions for “Consequences”

During the making of “Consequences”, Cabello had a number of primary goals. According to her, these goals were to make the listener do the following things:

  • “Feel”
  • Remember “someone you loved and lost”
  • Think about what it feels like to fall so deeply in love with someone

Facts about “Consequences”

  • Cabello co-wrote this ballad with Emily Weisband, Amy Wadge and Nicolle Galyon.
  • Record producer Bart Schoudel was the sole producer of this track.
  • A significant portion of this song was already written by Wadge, Galyon and Weisband before Cabello came into the picture. According to songwriter Wadge, after she and the others had worked on the song, she sent it to singer Ed Sheeran (who is her longtime collaborator). Having listened to the song, Sheeran instantly knew the song would be perfect for Cabello. He therefore sent it to Cabello himself. Cabello added additional writing to it and came up with the finished product. Wadge revealed this to Music Week shortly after the track came out. Based on this, we guess it is safe to say that had it not been for Sheeran, this song might have not been released by Cabello.
  • According to Cabello, she re-did the vocals on this track as many as seven times over a period of almost a year. Her main goal was just so she could properly “recapture it”.
  • “Consequences” was first released on January 12, 2018. It is the third single from Cabello’s self-titled debut studio album (Camila). The first single from that album was “Havana”. The second was “Never Be the Same”.
  • Cabello performed this track for the first time on April 9, 2018 (months before it was officially released).
  • At the 2018 American Music Awards, Cabello performed the orchestral version of “Consequences”. It was one of the highlights of the event.

Who is the guy in the music video for “Consequences”?

That is American actor Dylan Sprouse. In the video, he plays the role of Cabello’s ex-lover. The highlight of the clip is the kiss Cabello shares with Dylan.

This song has a different meaning to me for me it reminds me of an abusive relationship, that the person had to keep secrets about the abuse hidden and it ended badly but through it all it was worth it but had consequences such a beautiful song to help me through a really bad relationship makes you set down and try to get an understanding of the versus and I know everyone has a different perception of the song but I love it. Thank you Camila cabello and the rest of the writers.

This song for me made me feel about how I used to hide the abuse I got at home as a child and because I loved my parents I never said anything the stop the bleeding part of the song was really what caught me because it brought me to the sexual abuse parts of my childhood as well as the mental abuse the eating disorders everything I love this song because it helped me gain strength to tell people about what was happening

@Jade I am so sorry that happened to you. People should never have to go through that. My dad is emotionally and mentally abusive and has pushed my mom before (he was on some hardcore drugs at the time). Everything is starting to get better. I hope yours is getting better too.

I found this song on Wattpad. In the story The girl in the hoodie by sarcasticallywitty. She played it as a background song. God knows how much tears I shed. I’m unable to listen to the song without crying. Cause the main character in the story died of cancer🥺

This reminds me of home. So thank you Camila for making this absolutely amazing song. Stop the bleeding caught my attention because that’s what I used to have to do. I always blamed myself for everything bad that happened to my family, which had put so much pressure on me that I couldn’t take it anymore. That was the first time I had picked up the razor.
