Melanie Martinez’s “Soap” Lyrics Meaning

The lyrics of Melanie Martinez’s “Soap” center on the singer’s feeling of regret and vulnerability after she confesses love to her male friend. She immediately feels like washing her mouth with soap as a means of punishing herself for letting out her feelings so easily. The reason for her fear is because she believes that their current platonic relationship will be hurt and she really cares about what this person thinks of her.

Melanie uses several metaphors from a bathhouse, including a running faucet to describe her outburst of words and emotions. She uses ‘soaking’ to describe the reaction of her male friend to her confession. The word “bathtub” is used to represent their love. She use his “fingers pruning up” to explain how she thinks he would eventually breakup with her if they date.

Although she is able to let him know of her interest in dating him, she immediately regrets it because she thinks it might ruin their friendship.
