Yungblud’s “Mars” Lyrics Meaning

Yungblud’s “Mars” is reportedly about a transgender young woman, i.e. a woman who at birth was assigned the male gender. Owing to this, she acts and dresses accordingly. Of course such behavior is sadly derided by many, and as such she faces challenges in school and at home. Thus she fantasizes about getting away, specifically “to California” where such a lifestyle is accepted. And ultimately, the way the term Mars is used in the lyrics is to point to a similar notion, i.e. a hypothetical location whereas those who feel “irrelevant” and “scared as f**k” can live at peace.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Yungblud's Mars at Lyrics.org.

So as has been his norm, Yungblud is acting as a social activist. And not only is he defending the trans community but also those who are racially oppressed and advocate climate change. Those are the type of people he envisions being beside him and other likeminded individuals on “Mars”.

This song came out via Locomotion Records and Interscope Records on the 27th of November 2020. Yungblud had first teased it a couple of days earlier, on 25 November, via his Instagram account. It is the fourth single from Yungblud’s 2020 album entitled Weird!

Yungblud wrote “Mars” along with Matt Schwartz. The singer’s inspiration is based on a real-life story in which one of his performances helped a transgender finally be accepted by his/her parents.

“Mars” was produced by the grouping of the following:

  • Zakk Cervini
  • Mike Crossey
  • Omer Fedi
  • Chris Greatti

Hey, I would like to let you know that when a person is transgender, you should address them according to the gender they identify as. So it wouldn’t be s/he, it’s she, and her pronouns are she/her as long as she identifies with them. Also, if you could correct a sentence, a transgender person doesn’t “rather” be a female or a male, but they are one, although their body doesn’t match with their gender. I hope you can correct it, have a good day!

      👆🏻WHAT THEY SAID 👆🏻
📣 LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE WHO SAY “I didn’t know “ after being repeatedly corrected and then claim ignorance every time.📣
**2 seconds later continues to use the wrong pronouns because they are that shltty of a human being and have little to no respect for anyone.

If your born with genitals, your a man.
She was prolly assigned male gender, because she had genitals. Years ago this person was called hermaphrodite

Anon, you are too funny. Well not really because of your ignorance of people and also the language we call English. All people are born with genitals, even you. So it is not just males, according to your comment. Also the term has changed for those born with both sets of genitals. It is now called being intersexed. But, you chose to show your lack of knowledge with even simple concepts like understanding the difference between “your” and “you’re.” Once you learn to master those, then come back and we can chat more.

^^ I was about to say this. Also, instead of “transgenders,” phrasing it as “the trans community” would be a little better!

Yes, holy sh*t yes thank you random person for saying this!!

Yesssss! I was about to write that a transgender girl isn’t “a male that wants to be a female”, that’s honestly a very disrespectful and just really bad way to put it, and it really doesn’t depict the trans community right and transgender people right! 🙂

Bruh why so many people getting so mad at you lmao, you made a mistake, be good people 🖤✌🏻😂

I agree with this. My bestfriend is a trans male his girlfriend is a trans female and I love them very much. I am a demiboy (someone who leans more towards boy but not completely) and so I can relate. People are people and should be respected.

I’ve read on ig that he was in contact with her, and when she decided to end her life, he wrote this beautiful song 💔

    Hi,
Could you please edit this? Another thing I haven’t seen said is transgender men aren’t males dressing as females, they are males stuck in the wrong body. The way this is written sounds like being trans is an option, and it’s not. Thanks 🙂

Its January and this article still hasn’t been edited – I’m going to re-voice the concern of many commenters above. The language in this article is quite offensive to trans people especially when considering it is written about such a beautiful, powerful song. You can’t call trans people “transgenders” in the same way you shouldn’t go around referring to the black community as ‘the blacks”. A trans woman is also a woman, and should be referred to as such, just like Yungblud does in his song.

    • SMF says:

Thanks for drawing our attention to this. We have finally made some modifications to the article. And we are sorry for the offensive nature of the article’s initial language. Kindly go through the edited version and let us know if it still requires changes. Thanks.

you really said “A transgender”.- That language is also offensive and harmful, please put a transgender person or something of that nature

Wow 💔 Dom really knows how to tap into people’s emotions. His music is amazing

  9. Alec says:

Some of the wording in this article is just … not cool. “-helped a transgender”? Helped a member of the trans community. Calling is ‘a transgender’ is just straight up offensive.

This song brings me to tears, I am a 65+ transwoman and this song metaphorically shows how I have felt inside, not physically maltreated, but with the verbal abuse from my family, My friends have been fantastic. Its not a choice, its a dibalitating condition that takes over your whole life, where you pretend to be what other people want and not what you feel. It never goes away, its like a race with an inevitable crushing boulder which you wont win unless you embrace yourself totally. It have transitioned and I have never felt happier. My friends say I am more calm and no longer trying too hard and I am now myself. I needed the help from others to be confident enough to step out. This song reminds me of what I have felt getting here. I feel free, relieved and no longer obsessed, lying in bed at night crying and making wishes to wake up in a different body or be dead by morning. You dont realise its a race you are trying to win for everyone else until one day you just take the plunge and after all the fear of the leadup to that day you tell the first person and its just fantastically beautiful – even if you arent.
