“Pray” by Jessie Murph
Honestly Jessie Murph’s “Pray” isn’t the easiest song to comprehend word-for-word. But what it seems like we’re dealing with here, especially as relayed in the first verse, is the vocalist being caught up in a tumultuous romance. As such, the thesis sentiment of this piece is one of despair, i.e. the singer wishing things were going better between her and the addressee, that being the man she loves.
And yes, certain lyrics, such as Jessie being so stressed out that she’s “up at night drinking liquor”, may read a bit too mature-minded for a singer who hasn’t even reached 18 years old yet. But that said, Jessie also appears pretty mature for her age in real life.
And whereas there is no indication that this song is based on her personal romantic experiences, the vocalist still comes off as someone who is able to perceive that the subconscious can be just as influential on a relationship as our conscious thoughts.
But in any event, what it appears she’s actually ‘praying’ for is that despite being in her feelings, the addressee will not realize just how much he has her stressed out. In other words, she doesn’t want him to know how much she still loves him despite the two apparently having already broken up. Or viewed differently yet again, the vocalist’s pride is unwilling to let the man she loves know just how emotionally vulnerable she is to him.

I also feel like pray is about suicidal thoughts and her saying “its something that ill pray you never know” could be to the person listening to the song or to anyone she knows, she prays that no one will ever know the feeling of waking up but wishing that you hadn’t, Jessie said the original version was about something different? but yh the final version is about depression i think!
yea, I thought I was about depression too based on the lyrics and the TikTok’s that I have come across with the lines, “Waking but wishing’ that you don’t…. It’s something that I pray you’ll never know”

I believe the song is about a reluctant girl who finally lets her guard down as soon as she “thinks” it seems safe (lyric reference: “I thought I wanted love ’til you showed me what it was”) then the guy shows his true self (lyric reference: “Got me thinkin’, questionin’, lyin’ in this bed I’m in“). She questions if he ever knew how badly he hurt her and questions if it was true love. Soon after, he abandons her and she no longer believes in love—given that she’s without her father validates her belief (lyric reference: “I don’t know a lot about my father”)
