“Señorita” by Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s “Señorita” seems to be premised on a case of love at first sight. On a ‘hot summer’ day, Shawn encounters Camila after arriving in Miami. And this meeting evolves into a night filled with “sapphire and moonlight”, with those terms being symbolic of the two of them spending the perfect romantic evening together.

Meanwhile Camila states that they both knew this romance has “been a long time coming” and that “some things… never change”. This would imply that perhaps they have known each other for awhile.  However, considering that Shawn already set the stage as their hook-up being a random encounter, rather the sentiment she seems to be expressing is one in which true love has finally arrived, despite the fact that Shawn seems reluctant to actually commit.

And apparently such an issue has contributed to the sentiment expressed in the chorus, which is that the artists apparently wanting to walk away from this relationship but lack the wherewithal to do so, as the love is too grand to give up. But there is no indication in the verses of what have caused them to feel as if they should leave.

Meaning of “Señorita”

And as for the title of the song, it is an appellation of affection, “Señorita”, which Mendes has bestowed upon Cabello. In English, “señorita” simply translates to “miss”, a way to address ladies. And just as much as Shawn loves saying it, Camila also enjoys hearing it.

So it is safe to say that this track focuses on two different aspects of the fictional romance between these artists. One is that they really take pleasure in each other’s loving. And the other is that this loving is so powerful it prevents them from breaking up, even though they are compelled to do so.
