“Tongue Tied” by Marshmello, Blackbear & Yungblud

The phrase “tongue tied” is actually a popular idiom alluding to the idea of an individual being unable to speak. A person can become tongue tied in a number of different ways. And within the context of this song, it references the artists not being compelled to truly and freely express themselves.

Moreover, as implied by the chorus as well as the track’s music video, this is due to them being repressed by powerful forces, i.e. prominent socializing institutions such as the government. However, in terms of the verses themselves, they have a more direct, interpersonal feel. Within, the vocalists are addressing individuals they are apparently closely associated with. And basically what they are saying is that such people are not genuine. Or perhaps more to the point, they have endured hate from these individuals who they were once cool with but currently are disturbed by their success. Yungblud also introduces something like a moral element into the song.

So conclusively, “Tongue Tied” operates on a number of different levels. But apparently the main idea of the track is something along the lines of the artists being discouraged, whether it is by a superior or some of their own peers, from expressing themselves freely.
